  • Connected Learning: Anytime, Anywhere, Everyone

We commissioned filmmaker Nic Askew (http://soulbiographies.com/) to make a series of films about connected learning, a new approach to learning designed for our times. This film examines the overflowing abundance of knowledge, expertise, and social connectivity in the networked age and the power of bringing people together who want to learn together through the internet and social media. Guided by six learning principles, connected learning is the outcome of a six-year research effort supported by the MacArthur Foundation into how learning, education, and schooling could be reimagined for a networked world. The film asks: ‘Might the information age free us to pursue learning centered on individuals and not institutions?’‘Perhaps each of us has a part to play in the possibility of education?’‘Might a broader definition and responsibility for education bring us all closer together?’The interview subject is cultural anthropologist Mimi Ito, a leader in the field of youth, technology, culture and learning; research director of the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub; and chair of the Connected Learning Research Network, which is supported by the MacArthur Foundation as part of its Digital Media and Learning initiative (macfound.org/programs/learning/).Other films in the connected learning series:'Essence' vimeo.com/37639766'Engaged' vimeo.com/47188676'Mentor' vimeo.com/43862075'Play' vimeo.com/47111398'Creative' vimeo.com/47547351To participate in weekly webinars and be a part of an emerging community around connected learning, visit: http://connectedlearning.tv To learn more about ongoing research into connected learning, check out: http://clrn.dmlhub.net/To see and share an infographic about connected learning: connectedlearning.tv/infographicTo find out more about the six principles and three guiding values of connected learning: connectedlearning.tv/connected-learning-principlesDon't forget to visit our home website: http://dmlhub.net/

  • Connected Learning: Building on the Basics

We commissioned filmmaker Nic Askew (http://soulbiographies.com) to make a series of films about connected learning, a new approach to learning he called "transformational."This film examines how creativity, shunned in the industrial age approach to schooling, is essential to learners in a networked society and a critical element of connected learning.Guided by six learning principles and three core values, connected learning is the outcome of a six-year research effort supported by the MacArthur Foundation into how learning, education, and schooling could be reimagined for a networked world. The film asks: ‘In this rapidly changing world might creativity need to sit at the heart of an education for all?’‘Might education now need to embrace these new forms of literacy for all students?’‘Might our future call for creative, literate, self expressive and resourceful students?’The interview subject is DePaul University associate professor Nichole Pinkard, founder of Chicago's pioneering Digital Youth Network (http://www.digitalyouthnetwork.org/), supported by the MacArthur Foundation as part of its Digital Media and Learning initiative (macfound.org/programs/learning/).Other films in the connected learning series:'Essence' vimeo.com/37639766'Engaged' vimeo.com/47188676'Everyone' vimeo.com/47111399'Mentor' vimeo.com/43862075'Play' vimeo.com/47111398To participate in weekly webinars and be a part of an emerging community around connected learning, visit: http://connectedlearning.tvTo learn more about ongoing research into connected learning, check out: http://clrn.dmlhub.net/To see and share an infographic about connected learning: http://connectedlearning.tv/infographicTo find out more about the six principles and three guiding values of connected learning: http://connectedlearning.tv/connected-learning-principlesDon't forget to visit our home website: http://dmlhub.net/

  • Connected Learning: Interest, Peer Culture, Academics

We commissioned filmmaker Nic Askew (http://soulbiographies.com/) to make a series of films about connected learning, an approach to learning designed for our times. This film introduces the thinking behind connected learning, which builds on the basics to make learning more relevant. It connects learning to people's interests, to real life, real work, real communities, and to the demands and opportunities of the digital age.The film asks:'Might the information age have presented us with the opportunity for a fundamental reimagining of the way we educate our children?''How might education come to life if children were to possess a burning need to know?''Might we each have a part to play?''Might this digital age hold the possibility of bringing us closer together?'Other films in the series:'Engaged' https://vimeo.com/47188676'Everyone' https://vimeo.com/47111399'Mentor' https://vimeo.com/43862075'Play' https://vimeo.com/47111398'Creative' https://vimeo.com/47547351To participate in weekly webinars and be a part of an emerging community around connected learning, visit: http://connectedlearning.tv/To learn more about ongoing research into connected learning, check out: http://clrn.dmlhub.net/To see and share an infographic about connected learning: http://connectedlearning.tv/infographicTo learn more about the six principles and three guiding values of connected learning: http://connectedlearning.tv/connected-learning-principlesDon't forget to visit our home website: http://dmlhub.net/

  • Connected Learning: Playing, Creating, Making

We commissioned filmmaker Nic Askew (http://soulbiographies.com) to make a series of films about connected learning, a new approach to learning he called "transformational."This film examines a fundamental human experience and key component of connected learning, 'play,' and explores whether it has been underestimated and whether, as a state of being, it holds answers for the reimagining of education.Guided by six learning principles and three core values, connected learning is the outcome of a six-year research effort supported by the MacArthur Foundation into how learning, education, and schooling could be reimagined for a networked world. The film asks: ‘Might we have underestimated the value of ‘play’?’‘How would your life look if seen through a playful state of mind?’‘Might confidence sit at the heart of an extraordinary education?’'Might a playful frame of mind stand to transform the experience of education?'‘Might a playful state of mind enable the strength of our true human spirit?’The interview subject is game designer and DePaul University professor Katie Salen, executive director of a non-profit called Institute of Play (http://www.instituteofplay.org/) that is focused on games and learning and leader of the team that founded Quest to Learn, a 6-12th grade public school in New York City, as well as CICS ChicagoQuest, a 6-12 charter school that opened fall 2011 in Chicago. Both Quest to Learn and Institute of Play are supported by the MacArthur Foundation as part of its Digital Media and Learning initiative (macfound.org/programs/learning/).Other films in the connected learning series:'Essence' vimeo.com/37639766'Engaged' vimeo.com/47188676'Everyone' vimeo.com/47111399'Mentor' vimeo.com/43862075'Creative' vimeo.com/47547351To participate in weekly webinars and be a part of an emerging community around connected learning, visit: http://connectedlearning.tvTo learn more about ongoing research into connected learning, check out: http://clrn.dmlhub.net/To see and share an infographic about connected learning: connectedlearning.tv/infographicTo find out more about the six principles and three guiding values of connected learning: connectedlearning.tv/connected-learning-principlesDon't forget to visit our home website: http://dmlhub.net/

  • PHP Tutorial for Beginners - Full Course
Learn the fundamentals of PHP and object-oriented programming in this free 7-hour PHP tutorial. Jeremy McPeak will help you learn PHP and use it to write web apps. PHP is one of the most used languages on the web. The vast majority of websites you visit are built with PHP on the back-end, and learning PHP is a requirement for writing plugins or themes for a CMS like WordPress. PHP is fast, but even better, it's easy to learn and easy to use for writing web applications. In this detailed PHP tutorial, Envato Tuts+ instructor Jeremy McPeak will teach you the fundamentals of PHP programming. You'll start with the basics, learning how PHP works and writing simple PHP loops and functions. Then you'll build up to coding classes for simple object-oriented programming (OOP). Along the way, you'll learn all the most important skills for writing apps for the web: you'll get a chance to practice responding to GET and POST requests, parsing JSON, authenticating users, and using a MySQL database.
